Lit. Mag Deadline Approaches and Passes
by Sara Gerdy
Wednesday May 5 was the final deadline for submissions to the high school’s literary magazine, Crossings. During the last week of collecting submissions, the lit mag staff which consists of about 7 students worked profusely to type-set and publish the magazine. According to advisor Dr.Brian Ferguson Avery, “We had quite a few more art submissions than poetry this year.” This may be because some of the art comes right from the art room and isn’t actually submitted by an individual.

The Lit mag deadline was this Wednesday and students on staff worked hard to get the magazine ready for publication.
The deadline for the magazine submissions was originally Friday May 1, but the club decided to extend it until Wednesday. “We wanted to extend the deadline until after our art and poetry show, which was a week and a half ago, because we saw that we had some participants who wanted to submit their work,” says Avery.
It is not known just how many submission there are this year, but according to lit mag staff member Tara Fritz, “We’ve got somewhere between 5 and 75.” Fritz was joking as she worked to type-set a packet of poetry.
This year the printing of the magazine will be done in the school, which is different from production last year. After publication the Lit-mag staff intends to have a party for staff, submitters and any supporters who want to show up. Cover art for the magazine has not been completed yet, but Avery hopes he will find a willing senior to design this year’s cover.
Some students may think that to be in lit-mag contributors have to be “artsy”, but that’s not it at all. Lit-mag kids do a lot of work with computers to publish the magazine and quite a bit of networking to find people who are willing to submit their work. Avery and the rest of the staff encourage students to check out becoming part of the lit. mag. staff and note that anyone and everyone is welcome.
