Opinion: Scholars Don’t Get the Breaks

How many students have gotten mad when fellow classmate gets to retake a test and the reason is because that student has a football game on Friday and needs to remain eligible?   This type of favoritism is a huge problem in today’s school system. The students who deserve these breaks aren’t the jocks but the scholars.

The scholars are the students who work hard in school while the athletes are working hard on the field but not always as hard in the classroom.  Teachers shouldn’t give athletes breaks if they aren’t going to give everyone else in the course a break as well. The worst excuse in the world is when a teacher tells someone who is already getting good grades that a poor grade isn’t going to hurt him that much.

It isn’t fair to the students who work hard to get good grades when the athletes get additional chances to get a passing grade when the scholar gets one.   If a teacher wants to give an athlete a break so he or she can continue to play, they should be prepared to give everyone else the same break.
